Financing Sustainability

📌 Operating CF / Financing CF (Net)

What It Measures:

This ratio compares a company’s internally generated cash to its external cash movements related to capital structure — including debt issuance/repayment, dividends, and equity transactions.

📘 Interpretation:

Financing CF is Negative (a typical case):

  • The company is repaying debt, buying back shares, or paying dividends.
  • A high positive ratio (e.g., 2.5) = strong operating cash covers financing needs → self-sustaining capital return profile.
  • Analysts may interpret this as:
    • Company is returning cash to shareholders confidently.
    • Potential for continued or increased dividends/buybacks.
    • Less need for new external capital.

Financing CF is Positive:

  • The company is raising capital — borrowing or issuing equity.
  • A low or negative ratio = operational cash flow is not enough to cover capital needs.
  • Analysts may read this as:
    • Company in growth mode (if paired with high investing CF).
    • Or, possible liquidity stress if operational performance is weak.
